Making Tomorrow, Starting Today

Past is Future

It used to be that we would stare at up at the stars at night to experience wonder. Now we stare at ourselves on screens. The wonder has gotten so much smaller even when our universe has gotten so much bigger.

The beginning of tomorrow can be today. The time for debate is over. What I want to see is a concerted movement over the next 50 years is to rebuild this civilization, one community at a time. But a firm philosophy must ground it such a movement.

Education can make or break a society. Something is clearly wrong with education in America, but what? The testing regime of the last many decades has not made us any brighter? I would love to see us bring in specialists and educators from other countries with successful education systems and see what they have to say. This of course, would require humility on our part. Admitting that we are not objective enough to solve this problem for ourselves. I say outsiders because many of them seem to do so well, with so much less. Our political leaders should want to know how.

The right holds the banner of family values. But the left holds a family values banner as well. Perhaps we need a more honest and nuanced conversation about what it means to value family.
